A Custom Plum Wrist Corsage & Buttonhole for a High School Formal
School formals are such a special milestone, and we love helping families create those little floral details that make the occasion even more memorable.
Recently, Miranda from Thomastown contacted Lillypad Flowers on behalf of her son, who was attending his high school formal at Melbourne Grammar School. She wanted to order a wrist corsage and buttonhole for the evening, with one very important request, she wanted the flowers to coordinate beautifully with her dress.
Matching the Flowers to Her Dress
Miranda kindly emailed us a photograph of her dress so we could see the exact colour and style she was working with.
This is something we absolutely love receiving when creating custom formal flowers. Seeing the dress allows us to get a much better understanding of the colour and choose flowers that complement it rather than simply trying to match a colour name.
The dress was a beautiful plum shade, so we designed the flowers around rich plum and complementary tones.
A Plum Floral Wrist Corsage
For Miranda's wrist corsage, we wanted to create something that was elegant and special without being overdone.
We selected a beautiful combination of plum-toned flowers and textured blooms, including:
- Calla lily
- Sim carnation
- Preserved hydrangea
- Scabiosa
- Paper daisy
- Pink thryptomene
The combination gave the corsage plenty of texture and interest while keeping the overall colour palette beautifully cohesive.
The plum calla lily was particularly important because of its elegant shape. It created a strong focal point while giving the corsage a sophisticated, modern feel.
A Simple Plum Calla Lily Buttonhole
For her son, we kept the buttonhole much simpler.
We created a single plum calla lily buttonhole designed to coordinate with both Miranda's dress and his tie.
We love this approach for formal flowers. The wrist corsage can have more detail and texture, while the buttonhole can be clean and understated, with the shared flower and colour bringing the two together.

Personalised Formal Flowers Make the Difference
One of the things we enjoy most about creating corsages and buttonholes is that they don't have to be generic.
A photo of a dress, a tie or even a particular outfit colour can completely change the direction of a design.
Those small personal touches are what make formal flowers feel special.
We know how much preparation goes into a school formal, from dresses and suits to hair, makeup and photographs. Having the flowers ready for collection on the morning makes things just that little bit easier.
