Custom Coffin Flowers That Tell a Story

Some of the most meaningful funeral flowers we've ever created haven't started with a particular flower or colour.

They've started with a story.

Recently, Rita called Lillypad Flowers wanting to create something truly personal for her dad. She didn't want a traditional coffin arrangement that simply looked beautiful. She wanted the flowers to represent who he was, what he loved and the life he had built.

And we absolutely loved the idea.

Using Flowers and Foliage From Dad's Garden

One of the first things she asked was whether she could bring in lemons and foliage from her dad's garden and have us incorporate them into the coffin flowers.

For us, this was such a beautiful request.

Using something that had grown in his own garden meant that a part of his home and everyday life could be included in the tribute.

The lemons weren't simply an extra decoration. They were something that belonged to him.

We always love when families bring us meaningful elements to incorporate into funeral flowers because it makes the arrangement so much more personal.

Creating Funeral Flowers That Represented His Life as a Builder

The next request was even more personal.

Her dad had been a builder, and she wanted to include his toolbox and tools as part of the tribute.

Rather than hiding those items away, we wanted to make them feel like an intentional part of the design.

The toolbox immediately gave us a direction for the colour palette. We started thinking about earthy, warm and masculine tones that would complement the colours of the tools and create a cohesive arrangement.

This is where the idea of using native Australian flowers came into the design.

Rust-Coloured Banksias for a Masculine Funeral Tribute

We showed the family some beautiful rust-coloured banksias, and we immediately felt they would work beautifully with the toolbox.

Banksias have such a wonderful natural character. Their sculptural shape and earthy tones gave the arrangement a more masculine feel while still bringing warmth and beauty.

They also worked beautifully with the garden foliage and lemons.

Rather than using flowers simply because they are traditionally associated with funerals, we were able to select flowers based on the person we were trying to represent.

A Landscaped Style Inspired by His Daughter

There was another lovely connection that helped shape the design.

His daughter was studying landscaping, so we thought it would be fitting to create the coffin flowers with a slightly landscaped, natural style.

Instead of making everything look overly structured, we wanted the arrangement to feel as though it had naturally grown around the coffin.

The foliage, banksias, lemons and other flowers created layers, texture and movement, giving the tribute a beautiful garden-inspired quality.

It felt like a meeting point between her dad's love of building and her own passion for landscaping.

The Moment We Saw Her Reaction

The most rewarding part for us came when the daughter arrived to pick up the tribute.

We were absolutely overjoyed to see how happy and appreciative she was with the finished arrangement.

We could see that it wasn't just a beautiful piece of funeral floristry to her.

She could see her dad in it.

The lemons from his garden. The foliage. The toolbox and tools that represented his working life. The earthy banksias. The landscaped style that reflected her own passion.

All of those little details came together to create something that felt genuinely personal.

For this tribute, we didn't want to focus only on saying goodbye. We wanted the flowers to tell a story about a dad who built things, worked with his hands, cared for his garden and had a daughter who wanted to honour him in a very personal way.
