About Preston

Preston is one of the suburbs in Australia, which sits nine kilometers north from the Melbourne Central Business District.

According to the 2016 ABS Census, Preston had a population of 32,851. In which, 49% were male and 51% were female. 

There were 8,013 families and the average family had 1-2 children (1.7). Also, 57.9% were born in Australia. 

History of Preston

In 1837, the area where the suburb belongs was first surveyed by Robert Hoddle. Portions of land between 300 and over 1000 acres were sold during the “Land Boom” of Melbourne in the late 1830s.

In 1841, the first permanent white settler in the suburb was Samuel Jeffrey.

The Preston Post Office opened on March 1st, 1856.

By the 1860s, Preston had a population of around 200 people. There were also 5 hotels, and three of which only survive: Reservoir’s Rose Shamrock (1854), The Preston Hotel (1859), and the Junction (1861).
